It is not retinol, it is bakuchiol
Bakuchiol is a plant extract that has recently become very interesting in the world of cosmetics and dermocosmetics. It gained its popularity due to its action which is very similar to retinol.
Bakuchiol is obtained from the babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia, Hazel clover) that grows in India and Sri Lanka. He first isolated it in 1966 from the seeds of the said plant. Bakuchiol is a meroterpene (a chemical compound that has a partial terpenoid structure) in the terpenophenol class. The seeds of the plant have been used for centuries in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine to treat dermatitis, lichen and psoriasis because it has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects.
The reason for the current popularity of bakuchiol is recent research whose results have shown that it is just as effective as retinol in treating signs of aging such as wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, with better tolerability, or less skin irritation and peeling compared to retinol.
Bakuhiol is as effective as retinol but does not dry out the skin, does not cause irritation and redness. It can also be applied during the sunny season, because the skin does not become photosensitive. As it can be used by the most sensitive skin, but also by pregnant women, its use will be increasing.
