Stress Management by Changing Body Posture

Stress has many different facets and ways to deal with stress. Have you ever considered how your body language affects your posture, and how your posture affects your mood? Begin to notice how your posture chances in different circumstances and observe what it is about people that helps you realise how they might be feeling. Body posture gives away a lot of clues about mood and emotional state. Think about this for a moment. If you are 'on top of the world' how would you greet your friends? How would you come into the room? Close your eyes for a moment and think about this. Imagine you are very happy. Something wonderful has just happened and you can't wait to share the news with someone special.

Think about your expression; the way you walk; the speed of your steps. Then change the scenario. Imagine you had just had some bad news. Something you were looking forward to, had been cancelled. Something you thought you could have is no longer available to you. As you think about your mood in those circumstances, think how you would feel. Really get into the mood. Then notice how your body is changing. How your shoulders bend forward as you feel more and more unhappy.

The mind is so powerful, though, that you can change this by changing the way you feel. It's like flicking a switch. As you think about being extremely happy, you will find your shoulders going back and a smile coming on your face. You will feel your heart sing and spirit soar. Be aware how your body changes as you change the mood in your head. Now comes the fascinating part of this. It can work both ways. That means if you change your body then your mood will change too. You may not have realised this before but the best way to understand this is to try it and see what happens. So having become familiar with the way it is different with your various mind sets, you can experiment with changing your body posture and notice how you feel in the different postures.

Notice what happens when you walk with your head bent over looking at the ground, and how you change in the way you feel when you stand up more straight and are involved in something you are enjoying. So in future if you want too change your mood and have less stress try to change your body posture. This might mean standing up when you've been sitting, or standing taller with shoulders back and upright back.
